The vineyards of the Setúbal Peninsula are mainly broken down into two zones: the mountainous zone formed by the Arrábida, São Luis and Rasca mountain ranges and their extensions into the hills of Palmela, Barris, São Francisco and Azeitão, ranging between 100 and 500 metros of altitude; and the plains of the Palmela and Montijo municipalities extending south, dominated by the Pliocene geological formation of Pegões around the Sado River basin with a quota comprised between 30 and 100 meters.

These orographic characteristics markedly affect the climate that is felt in the region. The climate of Southern Portugal is typically Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers alternating with relatively cold and rainy winters.
The average annual rainfall varies between 550 and 750 mm, having a distribution which is similar to that of the rest of the country. The months of June to August are those with the most rain deficit, which is also due to the poor water retention property of the soils.



 



In terms of temperature, relatively high temperatures (25 to 28º C) are usually recorded during the summer months.

The average annual humidity level ranges from 75% to 80%, thus reflecting the region's proximity to the ocean, presenting lower levels in the summer months. The dominant winds blow from the North, Northwest and West. The region also has a high number of hours of sunlight, around 2,200 hours, with an average of over 300 hours of sunshine per month during the summer months.
